Buying a "Winter" Puppy?

So you want a puppy, and you want it now!!  ....but it's winter, and it's cold, and there's snow on the ground and the puppy won't  go out to do "his business."

You are absolutely correct.  Dachshund puppies in particular (and adults for that matter) are not fond of cold, wet, sleet, freezing rain...you get the picture: any type of inclement weather.  If you cannot wait until nicer weather and live where it actually rains, snows, sleets, you might want to consider the following:

1. Identify a place in your home that is "puppy safe" where you can put down papers for them to "do their business".  Obviously, the best is a tile, vinyl or cement floor than can easily be sanitized when the papers are lifted.  If you only have carpet or hardwood, you can always put down enough papers to protect the underlying floor.  If this is close to an outside door, even better: the puppy will associate going to the bathroom with the door and as they get older, if you see them sniffing around in that area, they can be let out.

2. Buy and exercise pen. It is one of the best investments you can make for yourself and your new puppy (regardless of the season).  Exercise pens are sold at all major pet supply stores such as PetSmart, Petco, Tractor Supply, etc.  They are often cheaper when purchased online through www.dog.com or www.revivalanimal.com or www.petedge.com   These are the vendors I primarily use.  There are many others.

For a dachshund puppy your pen doesn't need to be very tall. Place papers on the floor and put your pen on top of them.  Take your new puppy to the papers frequently and let him go to the bathroom.  The most predictable times are after awakening and eating.  The more often they go here, the more normal it will seem.  It can also make a nice safe place for your puppy to play when you can't be watching him or when you are away.  You can put a small crate (cat size) in the enclosure providing him a place to sleep, a bowl of fresh water and he is set--and SAFE--for those time when you are busy or out of the house.

Keep in mind, most puppies have come from their breeder already used to going on papers.  This is "normal" behavior by the time they arrive in their new home.

Finally, when nicer weather arrives, the x-pen can be moved outside.  By then the puppy will be used to the idea of going in the x-pen and you won't have to wait around for them to *decide* where they are going to relieve themselves.
